Reflection for 16th October 2016 we are in Cycle 3: celebrating 29th Ordinary Sunday mass,Inviting us to analyze about value of intercessionary prayers.

Last few sundays we reflected on how to develop faith, leading from trust with God. Previously we concentrated the value of Charity. Today we concentrate how to maintain hope through prayers and value of intercessionary prayers.

Why we pray for others?. Others can be your immediate relatives or unknown person. We pray for the support of God to resolve their problems. Why God is eager that we pray for others?. These are the normal questions that we might come across

This shows the basic concept of Christianity. We believe humans belongs to one family with God as the FATHER. Normally other non God fearing religions, support other human, because of inter dependency of humans. You cannot live alone. For you to live you need the support of other person. Catholics have more reason to support any human, not only due to inter dependency but due to one family concept. That is Why we should feel the problems of other, whether they are associating with us or not.
Under the present communication explosion, any information of one corner of this globe will be informed to the other corner with a matter of a second. One family concept of God is achieving, making you as catholic to be aware about other human problem. The beautiful method Catholicism has provided is to pray for others. Be vigilant about others problems.

God in HIS own wisdom, showed us the value of going thru' Holy Mary, for us to mange our problems. He showed us that HE will give an incentive of new wine when we do that!. Similarly Holy Mary was requested to look after humanity. Holy Mary, unlike other saints, has been given a special task of looking after humanity. That is why Mary appeared in many places and provide us appropriate messages: for example take Fatima apparitions. When we analyze after 99 years, we see:
During first half of last century, you saw

(A)2world wars!(1914-1918)(1939-1945)

(B)Ideals, values &Institutions that has shaped &nurtured our civilization were overthrown &trampled upon

(C)Communism seized power in Russia 25days after(13/10),last apparition of Fatima

(4)she showed Hell.Mary gave timely messages for mankind of imminent catastrophic collapse of governments, justice, religion& morality which started in early 20th century&is continuing in various forms to effect us ever since!.

How Mary fulfill her promises
(1)Falling of Berlin Wall &Iron Curtain in9/11/1989, &changes in Eastern Europe

(2)Attempt of Holy fathers life,after64yrs13/5/1981,Pope St John Paul2 was shot&critically wounded in Vatican.JP2 at that moment, stopped,to bless girl who was wearing Badge Of Our Lady Of Fatima, this allowed bullet to strike in abdomen instead of his head!.

Only one request after 99 years are still pending that is she asked you to pray daily Rosary:

What is this Rosary?
Before Christianity, Hindus strung beads and used them to help count their prayers. Buddhist, Taoists and muslims have also used prayer beads to assist them in their private devotion. Hebrew used to tie 150 knots on a string to represent the 150 psalms of the Bible. According to pious catholic traditions, in the 13th century, Mary, the mother of God, appeared to St Dominique de Guzman, gave him a rosary and asked that instead op praying psalms on the beads or knots, the faithful pray the Hail Mary, our father and glory to be. Fifteen decades made up the original Dominican Rosary, but it was later abbreviated. A decade refers to 10 hail Mary's preceded by our father and ending with Glory Be. Today most Catholics used the 5 decade Rosary.

Last sunday, God revealed us when you are faithful to God, you can remove a mulberry tree and plant it in sea. In order for you to do that, you should develop faith with God. That means you treat God as master and you as servant. In order to treat God as master, you should follow his revealed truths, given in church traditions+follow his rules 10 commandments+avoid 7 deadly sins+ receive eucharist+carry out merciful actions.

Once you are faithful with God, do you need Mary or saints, for you to intercede God?. Today gospel clearly shown, when moses praying with raised arms battle is won. When his arms are tiered, other 2 supports to raise his hands.

Let's summaries today's readings:

1st reading Exodus: 17:8-13 says" as long as Moses keeps His arms raised to God in prayer, his people are successful in battle.

2nd reading Paul says to thimothians(2 Tim3:14-4:2)" all scripture is inspired by God: it is source of wisdom. Paul charges Timothy to preach this inspired word always.

Gospel Lk 18:1-8: to emphasize perseverance in payer, Jesus tells the parable of the widow who refuses to give up demanding her rights.

In order for us to reflect today's readings, let us first analyze:

What is praying?
Traditionally, Catholicism has 4 kinds of prayer.
(1) Adoration: Praising God
(2) Contrition: asking for God's forgiveness
(3) Petition: asking God for a favor
(4) Thanks giving: showing God gratitude

The church believes that the Holy mass is the highest and supreme form of prayer. So it has all 4 elements in it. Gloria is the adoration part, while the confiteor and penitential rite are the contrition part. The prayer of faithful also know as the general intercession, which is a prayer of petition. The thanks giving part comes after Holy communion, when gratitude is shown for all the graces given in mass.

How to pray?
You must never become defeatist in your prayer of petition. As long as Moses keep his arms raised in prayer to the Lord, his people are victorious in battle. When he drops his tired arms, they lose. Beside perseverance or consistent there are other important lessons in reading 1. It is obvious that God wants to hear us, but God obviously wants to asked. Again, we note the importance of the sign of raised up hands. Even word less signs can be prayer. Finally the reading brings up the importance of help in prayer. Moses could not have kept his hands outstretched without the help of Aron and Hur. It is a clear message, that more help we get from others in our prayer, the more effective it will be.

Answer to prayers:
While. God doesn't answer every prayer precisely as we want, HE does answer persistent prayer in a way that is help full for us. And the clue to what HE does is in the last sentence of today's gospel"if you then evil as you are, know how to give your children what is good, how much more will the heavenly father give the Holy spirit to those who ask HIM.(Lk 11:13).

Holy Spirit is given to us for 3 main reasons: as a source of guidance; is a source of resilience and strength, and as a consolation. HE comes to bring us through. Really,How often have you heard people say that God gave them the strength from somewhere? Our God is not deliberately deaf. HE tell us Himself that HE does listen

In conclusions:
Beneath the surface of celebration or normality in life, you have worry or anxiety or pain. If that is your state of mind, we pray that the Holy Spirit will bring you 2 of His greatest gifts; PEACE OF MIND AND THE GRACE TO COPE. And please don't loose your heart yourselves, as Matthew 11:6 says" BLESSED IS ANYONE WHO DOES NOT FIND ME A CAUSE OF FAILING"

Thank you
God bless you!

(1) What is the difference between trust and faithful?
(2) Why Jesus talk about faith/wonders/servant during last sunday
(3) Today, NAMM offered gift to Elisha; but he refused. Why He took sand to israel to worship God?. Is it intercessionary prayers useful?
(4) Why 9 lepers did not come to thank God: did they trust God or faithful to God
(5)How to become faithful to God? And increase your faith!

Are prepared to spend about 8 minutes(0.6%) out of 1440 minutes of today. Then pl listen!

http://www.sinhalagospel.lk/sundayreadingAudio/28thordinarySundayservantCatholic.html

Reflection for 9th October 2016 we are in Cycle 3: celebrating 28th Ordinary Sunday mass,Inviting us to analyze the difference between trustful and faithful catholic.

Trust is the strong belief in the honesty, goodness etc of someone. This always has to be compared with your expectation. You expect your trusted person, carry out action, according to your expectation. So you become master, while other person become servant. If the other person acts contrary to your instructions, you become angry or frustrated.
In contrary, what is faith: while you trust the person, you accepts his theories to be implemented in your life. You accept his revealed information as truth and voluntarily follow him. So he become your master, while you become his servant. Even when Some unexpected thing happened, you will not loose trust about that person, and you will have always hope on him that when you follow his revealed truths, that you are going to be successful.
As catholic, you start with trusting God, then you develop your faith, by following his revealed truths.

We know human, is weak, he not immaculately conceived. Becoming faithful to another person, other than God, may tend to be difficult for any human. With God, developing faith on HIM is easy, since, HE is ideal person.

Let us analyze today's readings

1st reading: 2Kings 5:14-17 says" pleased at his cure from leprosy, Namaan the syrian believes in God and returns home with 2 loads of israel's soil.

2nd reading:
2 Tim 2:8-13 says " there is no change in the word of God" writes Paul from prison. He will bear the suffering to obtain salvation for others:
Gospel 17:11-19 says" Jesus cures 10 lepers, but only one of them, a samaritan, return to give thanks.

When we reflect today's readings, you will see that
there is much drama both reading 1 and Gospel. In both stories there are healed lepers. There is thanks giving, and there are persons who instrument of healing. In Biblical time lepers lived Without hope. But in both readings today there is healing. Namaan. Syrian is healed, when he follows Elsha's directives and the 10 nameless lepers in the Gospel are cured while on the way to show themselves to the priest, as Jesus has directed them.

Namaan cure results in belief in God, and he wanted to show his gratitude with a gift to Elisha. When Elisha refuses the gift, Namaan ask for 2 mule load of soil so that he can worship God on Hebrew soil when he returns home. In the gospel only one person returns to thank Jesus, and he was a samaritan, a foreigner.

In order to analyze these incidents further, let us analyze
What is healing?

Healing(literally meaning to make whole) is the process of the restoration of health from an unbalanced, diseased or damaged organism. With physical damage or disease suffered by an organism, healing involves the repair of living tissue, organs& biological system as a whole & resumption of normal functioning. It is very seldom, that you can cure from disease by yourself without support of 3rd Party(doctor or medicine).

So know that you are powerless.

Modern science reveal, faith will enhance to heal. Developing deep sense of spiritual faith is a protective measure for dealing loss, illness & psychological disorders. When things seem dark,it really helps to have sense of HOPE & optimism about the future & a belief that goals can be achieved. Having +ve bias helps to override fear & maintain motivations. To increase faith, you should follow the revealed truth of God{sunday readings+ church(rules& traditions),while you treat your illness in normal way.

How you develop faith from suffering?

When you suffer or when you find the solution is complex, you normally start with handing over your problem to saint or God. When you are healed you trust that God has done that through Mary or saint. In modern life, while you are taking normal treatment, you rely on God or saint for you to recover.

But most of the case, Once you healed, you just forget God, and start only appreciating the normal treatment which has healed you. Most of the people even does not dare to tell that God supports for your healing. Like 9 lepers in today's Gospel.
Some people, just light few candles as thanks giving like samaritan today. Today readings says that you have to go beyond that. That is your healing, Jesus is inviting you to follow Him. What you can do? As a thanks giving, you start with repentance of your sins+have confession with priest+receve eucharist+do merciful actions

when  you Stop with healing, Without developing further your knowledge of God, You are similar to 9 lepers in the Gospel.

There are 3 kinds of people in the world
(1) Inactive (2) reactive (3) proactive

When a problem comes, you know that you are helpless to solve it, you need another person's support. Even with other persons support, when you feel, the solution is not coming, then only you try to seek spiritual exercises. then only you realize that God is the ultimate solution for your healing.
You become inactive when you don't trust God.
Once you are healed you get the opportunity to reflect more on who is this God: what HE has revealed for you to follow in your life. When you thank and forget to carry out HIS instructions you become reactive like Samaritan man in the Gospel. Of course we do not know, whether he followed God's revealed truths or not.
Instead in the 1st reading NAAM, he has healed, he wanted to worship God, throughout his life, by placing soil, under his alter, means HE wants to carry out actions for God, throughout the rest of his life. He is an example for proactive catholic, he wants to increase his faith. Though we don't know whether the samaritan man proceeded like NAAM, today's readings shows us the difference between these 3 types of people.

Healing has invited you to reflect more on God, and increase faith with HIM.
How to increase faith? Catholicism provide you 7 sacraments: specially the Eucharist, sacrament of reconciliation and sacrament of anointing sick. In addition you start to find out what is the revealed truth of God. First thng is to study the Gospel.

But be careful of Modern threat!with the Bible!
In order to follow the revealed truths: you should be cleAr what bible says: it will be difficult for you to get the actual meanings or interpretation of bible. For example. Final
Interpretation of bible lies with pope. ex:"If Ur hand causes U to sin,cut it off"(Mt 9:43)but you don't cut it, catholics believe that it is a warning for you not to sin.

Smilarly Jn14:6 says"I am the way& the truth &the life. No one comes to the Father except through me"Implying for everything you have to come thru' God.

Jn2: 1st Miracle of Cana, Implies, for your happiness, intercession of Mary will result, for you to be given more than what you, ask!(New wine).

When you read these 2 together, you will see the role of Mary and why intercessionary prayers are needed.

Catholic believe that intercessionary prayer are necessary for us to increase faith. Even today Isah and Namman story is good example.

In conclusions, today's readings invite you
to remember following important points:

1)To become a faithful servant, you should know what master wanted you to do,

2)When you are God's servant, what HE wanted from you is only known by reflecting Bible(Sunday readings)& following church traditions &rules.
3)Otherwise you don't develop faith & cannot realise 'wonders'.
4)Faith is supernatural virtue needed for Ur happiness+it is a gift of God.
5)It is given, whoever humbly seeks it.
6) Interpretation of bible lies with pope. ex:"If your hand causes U to sin, cut it off"(Mt 9:43)but U don't cut it
7)If U just say you have faith with God,U tend to become master, while God becomes servant?

Thank you
God Bless you

Some people try to know about their future by going thu' fortune tellers(palm reading) or going thu' horoscopes. But you will see these methods are not revealing your future.

In order to understand foresighted catholic life; Let us analyze about your life?

Normally all People actions are based on,' to find out ;'What Is In for me'. many times managers expect their employees to lead thru' flames for them but don't define what the purpose or rewards will be.

In the parable of crooked store keeper, shows farsighted thinking of him & how he acted to gain popularity, thru' DISHONESTY & CORRUPTION.
Here you should notice, he has not got advice from astrologer or any fortune tellers. But he uses his free will to secure his future.

. Jesus was advising his staff on ways to identify & increase their true wealth. HE said"I came that they might have life,& have it abduntly "Jesus definition of wealth is not be the same as earth bound wealth. HE clearly told how to secure HAPPINESS, in this life and eternal life too.

Some of the most insecure & un happiest people in the world is those who have every thing. In the long run, only by possessing God & being possessed by God,acquire you true wealth!.by carrying out merciful actions,to needy, you can multiply your wealth and achieve HAPPINESS.

In order to understand further, let us analyze, who are you and how you work.

Your body is having major 3 organs. Heart to pump blood; brain to carry out action given by you mind. Mind is the thoughts factory and your free Will decide which thought is better for you, to implement. Failure of any one organ will cause you to depart from this world.
Similarly You can see the world in 3 dimensional way.

(1) Your life is always interdependent- the loaf of bread lying on your table is a result of many humans. Somebody has to grow wheat, cut harvest, dry it, powder it,then going to the bakery, then only somebody will bring down to your table. If any one in between says no, you are deprived with loaf of bread. So you need another person's support to live. Hence you are interdependent with other human, that is why you have to always love others. That is why all religions in this World says, love your neighbor. This is similar to your heart function.

(2) Purpose of your life? Is to be happy. Every body in this world, whether you are 20, 50 or 100 years wants to spend your time peacefully and happily. This is similar to your brain function. You take action to lead a happy life.

(3) Brain is the interface of your mind to your body. In order to carry out good action you should have a well trained mind.
Here Catholicism tells you, God has created you to live happily, provided that you follow His will. In order to follow His will, you should follow what He has asked you to do. Not to Sin,I.e follow 10 commandments and avoid 7 vices. If you sin, follow the pardoning process. Repentance+confession with a priest+receive Eucharist+carry out merciful actions.

This part varies from one religion to another. So catholicism provides you how to behave your self or trained your mind, Not to sin and how to follow God's Will.

All human knows that he does not know 100% results for any of his action, and catholic believes that only God knows, all the outcome of your actions.

Hence for a catholic to live happily
(1) He should love thy neighbor as all other religions says
(2) Follow God's will by avoiding sins, and clear the effects of sins by pardoning process, which is clearly given by Holy Spirit
(3) Trust God for all outcomes for your actions.
Whether it is success or failure.

Today's reading:
1st reading:
Amos8:4-7 says- Amos,a social justice prophet, condemns those who "trample" upon the needy and destroy the poor of the land.

2nd reading
1 Tim 2:1-8 says paul proposes the ideal of universal prayers for all people, specially those who are in authority

Gospel Reading:
LK 16:1-13; the first part of Gospel is about crooked manager who cleverly arrange his future. The second part contains Jesus warning that no one can serve 2 masters-God &Money.

Some times, it might come to your mind, Whether there is a Change of Policy at highest level- heavenly approval for dishonesty?
Not quiet! The steward is praised not for his dishonesty but for his foresight
Having to move on, he was using money to help others and to help himself. If they look after them they will look after him, and his future will be secure.

Similarly, Jesus is telling us that you have to be as careful and farsighted About your spiritual growth and eternal happiness, as the crooked manager in the parable.

Jesus tell us we all have to move on too, from this life to the next. The foresight that we should exercise is to use our resources not just in our own interest but in the interest of others. If dishonest people look after one another in strained situations, how much more should Catholics look to the needs of their neighbors? Jesus message is clear, the way we treat others in this life will determine our treatment in next. Am 8:4 raise the concern you have to have for the needy and poor. He further warned that those who crushed the needy will have a day reckoning with lord.

In conclusion

Jesus is telling you that riches can endanger your salvation by Blinding you to the real and genuine values of life. Some of the unhappiest, most insecure people in the world are, those who have every thing. They are never satisfied, they want more, and many become grasping, miserly, greed, they live in terror that they will lose everything they have.

Jesus tells us today"make friends thru' yourself though your use of this world's good.".That is we are called to make friends of the poor by giving alms, food and shelter, but most of all,by giving ourselves, our hearts. And with that kind of giving, there is always an exchange.
May be it is not so much a question of what we do for them but what they can do for us. And what is that? They help us keep our values pure, prevent us from becoming victims of avarice and greed help us become more human- which may be the first step to becoming more Catholic. They may well be God's own messengers, helping us to serve  in his little ones, helping us make God supreme in our lives.
JESUS WAS RICH BUT HE BECAME POOR,
TO MAKE YOU RICH OUT OF HIS POVERTY.
What Jesus has being for us, we must strive to be for them. That is catholic life.

Jesus message is that human being is much more important than things. You cannot buy Happiness love or respect. Things don't make you happy, but people do. In the long run, only by possessing God and being possessed by God, can make you truly happy.  You cannot give yourself to God and Money or power.

Thank you
God Bless you!
